Vision and approach
The essence of good collaboration
As we speak 21st century organizations are dealing with challenges operating in dynamic, globalized and highly competitive markets. Companies like Sony, HP, Apple, Google, Boeing, Heineken, and Shell have proven at various levels that good collaboration is one of the differentiators to compete. By increasing the speed of information exchange, decreasing the hurdles to collaborate or by improving teamwork they were able to improve their performance (Hansen, 2010; van der Velden et al, 2007). Good teamwork can lead to better sales, innovation and production (Hansen, 2010). Good collaboration is the result of the fit between strategy, behavioral, organizational, cultural, technological and contextual factors (Gartner, 2008).
The old philosopher Confucius once said that it is not sufficient to tell people something, only by showing them and by letting them work with it will they be able to apply what they learned.
People have a habit of doing things like they are used to do them in the past. Not because they don’t want to do it differently. But mainly because they do not dare, or are not able to do it. We see this often as a blocker to starting to work in new ways. But these barriers can be removed.
How can this be realised?
By simultaneously involving
the culture, the organisation, the people
and the IT aspects, new ways of working can be adopted in a sustainable
way.
DistantTeamwork has developed an approach in which the organisation goes through 3 phases. The following questions are addressed:
- How can I improve the involvement of the business?
- Where are the most likely applications?
- How do I induce my organisation to try out a new way of working?
- What investments are necessary and what is the return to the organisation?
